چکیده

The combined output of LADAMER should be a comprehensive as well as spatially explicit image of land degradation effects and associated processes for the relevant European Mediterranean countries, in particular for the prototype region of the Iberian Peninsula. It will hence serve as a kind of integrating project between former research approaches and ongoing monitoring and assessment efforts. Consequently, the innovative aspect of LADAMER lies in the novel combination of optical remote sensing methods with advanced physical, ecological and socioeconomic modelling components. Combining these in a surveillance system is expected to substantially improve the quality of land degradation assessment and monitoring at the regional Mediterranean scale. The compiled data base is expected to build a basis for further GMES developments in the domain of land degradation research and other closely connected issues. These aspects will also be further pursued in the Integrated Project DeSurvey which also includes application sites in Northern Africa, Senegal, China and Chile.

Assessing Land Degradation and Desertification Using Vegetation Index Data: Current Frameworks and Future Directions

Land degradation and desertification has been ranked as a major environmental and social issue for the coming decades. Thus, the observation and early detection of degradation is a primary objective for a number of scientific and policy organisations, with remote sensing methods being a candidate choice for the development of monitoring systems. This paper reviews the statistical and ecological...

Rangeland Degradation Assessment in the South Slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, Northeast Libya Using Remote Sensing Technology

The degradation rate of Mediterranean steppes, especially in North Africa is 1% per year, and this considered a high  rate of degradation. This study conducted in 2014 in the south slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, northeast Libya to quantify the vegetation recovery rate and assess selected Vegetation Indices (VIs) for mapping rangelands degradation status using remote sensing technology. Throug...

A holistic approach towards assessment of severity of land degradation along the Great Wall in northern Shaanxi Province, China.

The farming and grazing interlocked transitional zone along the Great Wall in northern Shaanxi Province is particularly vulnerable to desertification due to its fragile ecosystem and intensive human activity. Studies reveal that desertification is both a natural and anthropogenic process. Four desertification indicators (vegetative cover, proportion of drifting sand area, desertification rate, ...

Design and Development of Early Warning System for Desertification and Land Degradation

Early warning systems are key components of strategies to reduce risk. This research, by adopting a systematic approach in the management of the risk of desertification and by including previously developed models and systems, offers an integrated efficient structure in terms of early warning for the risk of desertification as a pilot system for semi-arid areas of west Golestan Province in IRAN...
